Definitions of Various Terms & Acronyms
Acronyms
Assemblies
- TB
- Throttle Body, the assembly that controls the amount of air that enters the intake plenum.
Vehicle Classifications / Models
- 3S
- 3000GT / Stealth (/ GTO), the general term for any of the three models of vehicles, or for the platform as a whole.
- GTO
- Gran Turismo Omologato, translates to, "grand tourer homologated" (certified for grand tourer class racing), the JDM marquee for the 3S platform.
- SR
- No Real Consensus - Sport Roadster, etc. basically, "sporty".
- MR
- Mitsubishi Racing, a stripped down trim level of the JDM GTO meant for racing with no extra bells and whistles.
- 3000GT
- 3000mL - Grant Touring, a reference to the 3.0L engine, and the grand touring class of racing, the USDM and EUDM marquee for the Mitsubishi branch of the 3S platform.
- SL
- Sport Luxury, used to denote the mid-range USDM 3000GT.
- VR-4
- Viscous Realtime 4-Wheel Drive, refers to the all-wheel drive system of the turbo models (and the GTO SR), although only the USDM 3000GT got this badging.
- ES
- No Real Consensus - Exclusive Sport, Executive Sedan, etc. basically, "sporty".
- R/T
- Road / Track, a trim level used by Dodge on a lot of their vehicles to imply that they are, "Track Ready".
- TT
- Twin Turbo, a vehicle which has two turbochargers.
- 1G / 2G / 3G
- 1st / 2nd / 3rd Generation, refers to the "facelifts" of the platform. Typically 1G refers to the popup era of 1991-1993 (USDM), 2G refers to the fixed headlight, blade spoiler era of 1994-1996 (USDM) and 3G refers to the fixed headlight, hoop/combat spoiler era of 1997-1999 (USDM).
- 4G / 6G
- Refers to two series of Mitsubishi engines, 4G being an inline 4 cylinder, and 6G being a V6. The platform came with a 6G72 from the factory, but the 3.5L 6G74 is a popular swap, as is the 2.0L 4G63 from the DSM cars.
- MTX / ATX
- Manual / Automatic Transmission, whether the transmission in the vehicle is controlled by a computer or a manual gear shifter.
- Cali / Fed Spec
- California or Federal Specification Emissions, whether the vehicle has extra emissions-reducing equipment (Cali) or not (Fed).
Markets
- USDM
- United States Domestic Market, a vehicle manufactured to be initially sold in the United States (typically miles per hour odometer, left hand drive), does not mean manufactured in the United States.
- CADM
- Canada Domestic Market, a vehicle manufactured to be initially sold in Canada (typically kilometers per hour odometer, left hand drive), does not mean manufactured in Canada.
- EUDM / Euro-Spec
- European Domestic Market / European Specification, a vehicle manufactured to be initially sold in Europe (typically kilometers per hour odometer, right hand drive), does not mean manufactured in Europe.
- AUDM
- Australian Domestic Market, a vehicle manufactured to be initially sold in Australia (typically kilometers per hour odometer, right hand drive), does not mean manufactured in Australia.
- JDM
- Japanese Domestic Market, a vehicle manufactured to be initially sold in Japan (typically kilometers per hour odometer, right hand drive), does not mean manufactured in Japan (not all 3000GT's are JDM).
Computers
- ECU / ECM
- Engine Control Unit / Module, the computer that controls the fuel injection system and reports errors with the engine.
- TCU / ATCU / TCM
- (Automatic) Transmission Control Unit / Module, the computer that controls the shift points and reports errors with the automatic transmission.
- DCC
- Digital Climate Control, the computer in the higher trim levels that controlls the air conditioning and heating.
Sensors
- MAF
- Mass Airflow Sensor, the computer that is responsible for calculating the amount of air that enters the intake system.
- IAC / ISC
- Idle Air / Speed Control, a stepper motor that lets less or more air into the throttle body to account for other systems drawing power, so the alternator is not overloaded.
- TPS
- Throttle Position Sensor, a sensor that determines the position of the throttle butterfly valve.
- CAS
- Camshaft Angle Sensor, a sensor that determines what position the attached camshaft is at.
- CPS
- Crankshaft Position Sensor, a sensor that determines what position the crankshaft is at.
